The Boat - 1984 Passport 47
The Passport 47, introduced in the early 1980s, is a renowned bluewater cruiser, praised for its durability, seaworthiness, and elegant design. Designed by Robert H. Perry, the Passport 47 was intended for serious ocean cruising, with an emphasis on comfort, stability, and long-term liveability.
The Passport 47 is known for its solid, predictable sailing characteristics. It is stable and tracks well, even in heavy seas. Its relatively high displacement provides a comfortable ride, though it may feel less nimble than lighter, more performance-oriented boats.
Key Characteristics:
Length Overall (LOA): 47’ [14.3m]
Beam: Approximately 13’6” [4.11m], providing good interior space and stability.
Draft: 6’ [1.83m], making it suitable for ocean passages while allowing moderate coastal access.
Displacement: 34,000 pounds (dry), giving it a heavy, stable feel. 20 GRT [gross tons]
Engine: 60hp Diesel Beta, 62 gallons fuel in 2 tanks.
Sail Area: Rigged as a cutter, with a large mainsail, a headsail, and a staysail, the Passport 47 has a generous sail area that provides power for various wind conditions.
Power: Relion LifePO4, 800watts of Solar, 120amp Balmar alternator, Victron Multiplus 3000 inverter/Charger
Water: 40 gph reverse osmosis water maker, 120 gallon in 3 tanks.
Design and Construction:
Hull: Built with a solid fiberglass hull, ensuring robustness for open-ocean voyaging. The hull is relatively narrow at the waterline, which helps in upwind performance, while the beamier midsection and stern contribute to interior volume and stability.
Deck Layout: The deck is equipped with non-skid finishes and is thoughtfully designed with wide side decks and handholds, making movement safe and easy.
Cockpit: Aft cockpit design, providing safety and shelter, with deep seating and secure arrangements for handling the boat in rough weather.
Interior:
Layout: The Passport 47 typically has a well-thought-out layout for long-term cruising. Layout includes a spacious V-berth, a master stateroom and a quater berth aft.
Galley: A well-equipped, U-shaped galley with ample storage, positioned near the companionway for easy access and ventilation.
Saloon: The saloon is spacious, with a large dining area that can accommodate guests. Seating is usually designed for comfort and durability. (it also converts into another large berth)
Navigation Station: A dedicated navigation area with ample space for electronics and charts, essential for serious cruising.
